The Gallery De Kunstsuper, together with housing corporation Com.Wonen organized an art-route through the neighbourhood Tussendijken in Rotterdam.
For this art-route they invited artists to make a site-specific installation in one of the newly renovated houses the corporation is about to sell.

The neighbourhood Tussendijken was built in the 1920's as a worker's neighbourhood. Part of the buildings was demolished during a bombing in 1943. During its history the neighbourhood housed workers, immigrants, but also criminals and drugs dealers. At this moment the neighbourhood is part of a large scale renovating project, hoping to attract entrepeneurs, young families and couples.

With the installation 'Tijdslijnen' I tried to visualize the use of one specific house during the 1950's and the way it is going to be used in the future.

The house consists of three floors, plus a shop on ground level.
Before the recent renovation, the house was devided into two apartments: one covering the first floor and half of the third floor, with the second covering the second floor and the other half of the third floor.
After the renovation the two apartments have been turned into one, covering all three floors.
First I marked the ground plans of the two previous apartments on the floor boards, using white tape; thus, walls, doors, kitchens and toilets that don't exist anymore became visible.
I made up the two families that lived in two apartments during the 1950's: an elderly couple in the first apartment; a family with six children in the second.
I marked the routes that all persons of each two families took through their apartments during one day, using two distinct colours of tape: yellow for the elderly couple; green for the big family.

Next, I marked the lay-out of the future apartment onto the three floors using red tape.
On top of that I marked the routes of the future family - a young couple with one child - with blue tape.

In the end, the floors and the stairs of the house were covered with tape in five different colours, showing the way the house was used in the past, and might be used in the future.
Following the coloured tape, visitors can see how the apartments were arranged and how they were used. But especially they can see the amount of space people had, and will have: in the 50's a lot less then in the future situation. The density of the green lines for example (the big family is bigger then the one of the blue lines (the future family).

The work in the end, was not just a graphic visualisation, but a autonomous art work.
