'Destillaat 9', Extrapool, Nijmegen, The Netherlands
Each year Extrapool, an artists' initiative in Nijmegen, organizes an exhibition called 'Destillaat'. For this Exhibition they invite around 15 artist that just graduated at one of the art academies in The Netherlands.
All the participants are asked to make a new work, situated anywhere inthe three story-high building in the center of the city of Nijmegen.
I decided to make an installation in the staircase, that connects all three stories of the building.
Since some people live in the building, a lote of people work there and there are a lot of visitors; this staircase is used intensively.
I observed the staircase and registered the amount of people using it during one hour on a regular day.
I visualized the users by a painted wooden plank, glued on the steps of the staircase: each time a person used a certain step of the stairs, a wooden plank in a certain colour is glued on the step. A second person using the step, a second plank in another colour is glued onn top of the first. Repeating this for as much people using this certain step.
Distinguishing people moving up the staircase and people moving downward, the steps are 'devided' in two, sometimes showing two different colours.
In the end resulting in the staircase covered by painted woodenplanks, showing the amount of people that used this step, either upward or downward. The side of the stacks of planks showed the total amount of people.
The result was not just a visual effect on the stairs, but also a physical on the people using the staircase.
